Title: When Root Cause Analysis Isn’t Enough: Complex Problems and the Design Double Diamond.

Let’s face it… most of us aren’t very comfortable lingering in the problem space. We want solutions, and we want them fast. The trouble is, most problems we encounter in product development are not simple problems with a single solution and you may be is glossing over complexities in favor of patterns you’ve seen before.
How do we counter this tendency to jump from problem to solution based on past experience instead of the complex problem in front of us today? We need to cultivate good habits of addressing the problem space before going to the solution space. Designers do this using divergent and convergent thinking that’s been described as the Design Double Diamond.
In this talk, we’ll explore how to apply the Design Double Diamond to everything from big hairy problems to your every-day agile ceremonies until you’ve built a habit and a culture of exploring the entire problem space so that you can adapt and iterate on the highest impact solutions.
About the Speaker:
Holly is the Deputy Director of Product for the All of Us Research Program. She has a fierce desire to make products that make a difference. Her product experience is varied, from ballistic missile control centers to enterprise master data management tools to healthcare provider survey tools. The common thread through all of these products is a desire to solve real problems with thoughtfully designed products that serve their users and leave the world a better place.
Holly is passionate about approaching her work with curiosity. Whether that’s a product roadmap, a user research project, or a technical tradeoff decision; she brings a data-driven decision-making process to the table with a desire to learn and iterate.
